SPY DAY

A passion project turned legendary — part mystery, part immersive theater, all-in adventure.

SPY DAY is a fully orchestrated, invitation-only, interactive mystery experience created by Janet T. Planet — a weekend-long, city-spanning adventure that fuses storytelling, suspense, and absurdity in equal measure.

First launched in 2001, SPY DAY established Janet as a pioneer in the field of immersive experience design — long before the genre became mainstream. Each chapter begins six months in advance, when participants receive personalized spy dossiers detailing their cover identities, relationships, unique skills, and role in the mission. Over the course of the weekend, pairs of “spies” — often strangers — stay in character as they navigate timed rendezvous, decode clues, exchange intel in public spaces, and unravel a twisting plot that culminates in a high-stakes party orchestrated by an embedded “inner circle.”

Installments have taken place in London (England), Montreux (Switzerland), Downtown Los Angeles, and across the LA Metro Red Line. The most recent edition, held in Long Beach, California in 2024, drew 258 participants from 15 countries. Though not a commercial venture, SPY DAY has built a cult following and sparked countless lasting friendships.

The project has attracted the attention of major creative organizations — including Disney Imagineering and Virgin Voyages — and was the subject of Janet’s keynote address at the 2018 SATE conference, where she spoke to top leaders in the themed entertainment industry about world-building, personalization, and the joy of a well-kept secret.
