| Janet T. Planet is a fashion designer, a
mechanical engineer and an adventurous designer of many things. Her work is that of a true renaissance woman. Janet's clothing design is characterized by a richness of texture and tremendous sculptural qualities. She creates many of her own textiles using embroidery methods; technology combined with traditional craft techniques yield her signature painterly accents. Janet was born in 1976 in Southampton, Canada. When she was 9 years old, her family moved to Toronto where she immediately joined the Canadian Children's Opera Chorus. -It was this involvement with theatrical costume that sparked her interest in fabric and design. She began her career as a fashion designer while studying Mechanical Engineering at Queen's University. In 1998, after completing this degree, she moved to London, England to study womenswear at the world famous London College of Fashion. Janet's work always exuded great energy and individuality and her course director described her as an "exceptional student". She was recognized by LCF and chosen to represent the college in the Royal Society of Art competition 2 years running and the Grosser Preis Internationales Mode-Design Berlin 2000. She was also a finalist in the Lee Cooper Innovation in Denim Design Competition 2001. While studying, she served an apprenticeship with London designer, Dragana Perisic. Janet has been a part of a wide variety of projects, working most prominently within the music industry. In July 2001, she contributed to video work with Ben Ib (clothing and co-art-direction), for Bristol band Iris, which will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002. Clothing designs for bon-vivant and former Look People front-man, Jaymz Bee, won him a place on the Toronto-Star best-dressed list for 2001. In September 2001, Janet began working with world-celebrated singer Jane Siberry. Her involvement with Siberry's own label, SHEEBA, has included album graphics, styling, Siberry's touring clothes, the design of much of SHEEBA's current merchandise, as well as general artistic direction. In 2001, Janet created a "cocoon dress" for Bjork, which she presented to her in October in Toronto. At present, Janet is focussed on developing her own JANET T. PLANET label, and is using Toronto as a base. She is also excited to be a part of many upcoming international multi-disciplinary projects. Toronto Fashion Week |
